Hey ld and Don. Most hectic day since I've been back at work. This is the first time I've stepped in my office since 8:15 this morning.
Tom and Jerry Story- Simon and Garfunkel. This is from the Old Friends live set. It's just Paul and Artie talking about how they met and began working together when they were in elementary school. Before they were Simon and Garfunkel they were Tom and Jerry. They had their first and only hit when they were just 16 years old, Hey School Girl, in 1957. They went their separate ways after graduation, but when the Greenwich Village Folk Scene exploded they reformed as the duo we know today. |

AFTERNOON JOHNNY & LD!!
Just got a few minutes between working in the school library for my daughter and leaving to go hold tennis practice for my son's team. JOHNNY, I so enjoy your commentaries about the different versions of so many songs. Wonderful trivial information that you can't really find scouring the internet. Stuff you kinda had to learn when you first got the music that just sticks with yuo for some reason. I really missed your stories in your absence and in my intermittent appearances.. Wish I had time to write some drivel that I think is important but your luck is holding true today. LD, glad you listened to that NICK DRAKE song I suggested. He was much diffferent when he released his first album than he was just 3 years later when he released his last one. A very fragile psyche and unfortunate loss. JUST LISTENED TO: A nice mix of ROLLING STONES, BEATLES, NEIL YOUNG, & early ROD STEWART that I loaded on my IPOD and hit shuffle. Too many songs to list even for me but hard to hit a bad song from that collection of music. I will try to make one more swing thru about 2:00-2:15. Hope everyone has a nice day. |

I used to be a line-notes junkie (when all albums and CDs actually had them). It's one of the greatest losses of the digital age. Luckily, I have a good memory for trivial knowledge. I also recently read a Paul Simon biography, which had a lot of details I was previously unaware of. Tomorrow's World- Joe Jackson |

I used to read all the liner notes front to back-now I try and find that stuff online since it doesn't generally come with the music anymore. FANS, thanks again. Nick Drake was special, it's a shame he was gone so soon. Last one for me. Little story here.
I watch this show SOUTHLAND on TNT that started out on NBC a couple of seasons ago, a very gritty cop show kinda similar in tone to THE SHEILD but the cops aren't dirty in this show. Anyway, the main storey arc to the season finale which may be the series finale IMO revolved around this young street cop who started out naively as a rookie a couple of seasons ago but in the final episode he finally crossed that line of playing judge/executioner that he has been flirting with as his morals have devoloved. The show closed with a great use of STREET FIGHTING MAN, one of my favorite ROLLING STONES songs. The visual coupled with the irony of the music and the lyrics: Ev'rywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy 'Cause summer's here and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy But what can a poor boy do Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band 'Cause in sleepy London town There's just no place for a street fighting man was a great, powerful image. I have always liked the use of timeless rock and roll songs to convey a sense of mood in these anti-hero type of shows that I favor. JUST LISTENED T0: JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound - Sister Ray Charles Want More 1:44:15PM Chris Trapper - The More I Think The Few & The Far Between 1:48:45PM Death Cab For Cutie - You Are A Tourist Codes & Keys 1:54:35PM Ringo Starr - No No Song Goodnight Vienna 2:01:12PM Spoon - Who Makes Your Money Transference 2:01:33PM The Shins - Simple Song Port Of Morrow 2:05:19PM Soft Pipes - Stay Pretty Soft Pipes EP 2:09:35PM Jenny Lewis - See Fernando Acid Tongue 2:16:58PM |

I was watching the movie Boogie Nights last night and thinking about how much I appreciate when a director uses music effectively in a film or TV show-that one is an excellent example. One of the best rock n roll soundtracks for a movie is "Goodfellas". Good movie, but would be worth just listening to the soundtrack.
