Sometime next week, we’ll be taking down the current commenting system that’s found on stories, blogs, team and player pages. In its place will be a new system that features some major improvements.
Some features include:
Here’s a sneak peak:

c. “Follow” the particular conversation and get notified when other users comment or reply to your comments.Comments we will moderate include:
Other items worth mentioning:
Please feel free to ask me any questions. Once we launch, I’ll open a new thread to address any bugs you might encounter.

bluenosecanuck - STILL no 'ignore' function?!? Wow. Just wow.
TrollyMcTroller - Golly! You mean, now I can share CBS stories on Facebook and Twitter to generate more page hits for Viacom?
I'm so excited!

Doing the comments section the way it shows in the picture above makes the message boards look like one big mess. I'm definitely not a fan of that style, and I'm sure others aren't as well.
I disagree, but it’s all a manner of opinion. Also, remember that this change is for the comments stream that appears at the bottom of stories, blogs, etc. This won’t affect the message boards. They’ll be two separate things now.
The delete button also doesn't make sense. Users will now be able to delete pieces of the conversation in the thread. Do you honestly think the message boards will get better by giving users the option of removing large pieces of conversation in each thread? Again, this will also make this site look messy.
Naturally, you’ll only be able to delete your own posts—not the posts of others.
Release a full-site update instead of just a bunch of low-quality, small updates. Instead of rolling out with one feature one week, and one a few weeks later.
With some rare exceptions, that’s not the way websites work. Every department is vying for the same resources, and doing one huge site overhaul that’s all encompassing, while working on live events, simply isn’t possible.
Don't listen to every single user with suggestions.
I’ll listen to every single user that has legitimate suggestions, just like I’m listening to yours. The fact is that we can’t implement every suggestion that’s thrown our way, but I do enjoy receiving feedback.
We're not ignoring anyone. You don't like the social feature? That's cool--it's completely optional. Outside of the obvious visual appeal, this new component has features often requested by everyone--better spam filtering, better mod tools, easier to navigate, notifications, a better ratings system, etc.Oooooh. Visual appeal. Every time Viacom has implimented a site redesign, they've increased the "visual appeal" and taken away basic functionality.
Color me impressed. Why do you post here again? For someone who clearly dislikes every single community feature, you still visit multiple threads a day and are an active participant. Again, you don't like the features? That's cool--you don't have to use them. You don't like the community? Fair enough--vote with your usage and your time.

For someone who claims to want to make things better for the users, you sure seem to be towing the company line a lot and give a lot of lip service to "serving the user" without ever actually doing anything useful.

I realize I'll only be able to delete my posts and not posts made by other people. That's not the issue. The issue is people deleting their own posts. If somebody deletes their post, they're deleting part of the conversation. It's just not a realistic way to have a conversation when you sit there and delete something people should read. It'll make arguments and such more difficult.I think it'll be fine. If it's something that becomes a major issue, we'll address it.
No, the quicklinks aren't coming back. Simply bookmark you frequently visited page(s) on your web browser of choice.

I am hopeful (and don't know why) this might actually have some new functionality/usage, and I'm anticipating checking it out.

Really though, was an ignore button that hard to do?
Just out of curiosity (and I'm sure the powers that be, can't be bothered to track such things, but I'll ask anyway) have you recorded any actual user feedback about the Quicklinks feature? When everything was working as intended was there EVER any negative feedback about it?We looked at data for over a year, and the numbers showed that the overwhelming majority of registered users didn't have even a single quicklink. When it came time to discuss what would be included in the redesigned header, we didn't have the numbers to back a fight to keep then. The truth is in the numbers. The feedback of a vocal and passionate minority group of users wouldn't have been enough to counter the data.
Really though, was an ignore button that hard to do?It's not that it's a matter of difficulty, really. Several CBS sites are moving to the same comments component (Gamespot is one of them, for example) and the company who provides this technology doesn't have the feature built in to their service yet. Several sites, including ours, have made it known that we'd love to have such a feature. If/when they make the feature available, we'll bring it to our site as well.
