It will all come down to how well T-Hill performs in the preseason. I think he will be masterful. But that could also be part wishful thinking, but I don't think so

I doubt we could set the draft order even if we wanted to, since we're using the commissionerless free version, so unless CBS changes something it will be assigned randomly 24 hour before the draft.

I like the randomly assigned drraft order a day before the draft. It makes preparation harder.

I know it's early but I have one suggestion on the draft - for the sake of us old guys on the east coast that have to get up early for work - - PLEASE start it at, or before, 9:00pm rather than 10:00.  I need my beauty rest. .....

Heard and, in fact, anticipated. We'll wait until we have everyone lined up before we pick an exact date and time, but one way or another it won't start later than 9pm ET, and perhaps not on a Sunday.

The season starts Wednesday, September 5, so we'll probably have our draft within a couple of days of August 20th (early enough to be of interest on the boards, but not so early we don't have a clue).

I say we do it the earlier the better. it's way more challanging if we do it with the help of preseason. I say we do it up in Week 1 of the preseason.

Thanks for having mercy on the elderly. ....  I'm game for a fairly early draft date but would prefer to wait until after at least week two of preseason.  Not nessarily for any added intell, but for the sake of dreaded preseason injuries.  Not that it's the same thing, but we all know what happended to poor Joe last season with the on-again, off-again Peyton Manning saga - autodraft not withstanding.

Reminded me of a story...

A few years ago, the Bears' Lovie Smith said of TE Des Clark, "We plan on throwing to the TE more." Keep in mind, this was not a beat reporter quoting Lovie. It was Lovie himself who made this claim in the preseason of 2004!

Des Clark wasn't even a blip on the fantasy radar. I figured that I had some key "intell" straight from the horse's mouth. So I drafted Clark as my #2 TE in 2004.

All I can say is Lovie lied. If 24 receptions and 282 yards was the Bears attempt at throwing to the TE more, it was a poor attempt. So much for "intell."

As for Clark, he finally got thrown to... two season later in 2006 (626 yards). I was so mad for Lovie for that.

joe - that was before any Bears' TEs could blame mike martz too, lol!

foot - Thill better light it up in the preseason, as he will be going against mostly practice squad players from other teams. Most of the defenders he will see in preseason wont be on NFL rosters come week 1. SO.... if there is any hope in the Thill pot at all, he should rip up some preseason action. hell, even bradford led the Rams to an undefeated preseason, although i think the rams won a couple of those games after bradford was pulled, but nonetheless. I think defenses more so than offenses are wise to not tip their hand in the preseason by showing blitz packages/coverage packages and the sort too soon in the season. But really, any good OC or DC that is worth his weight in salt should have at least a couple of different set ups to roll out as the season progresses, and as matchups can be analyzed thoroughly after the season starts.

Personally, even considering what Newton did last year, I am still in favor of rookie QBs sitting out the majority of their first season, to give them time to adapt to the pros. I dont think there is a rookie QB anywhere that is used to the speed of the LBs and Ss in the NFL, compared to college. They all have some growing pains, and Thill wont be the exception, but I dont think Luck be great from day 1either. so the 'fins probably will be ok if they can get some decent talent for Thill to throw to.

Is Reggie Bush starting to feel the pressure yet? he should be with Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller breathing down his neck. Like we've said before, from a pure fantasy perspective, that is one of a few backfields (NWE, WAS, CAR) I wont touch until it comes time for a RB4 or RB5 to be drafted on my teams. Just too many mouths to feed and no telling who is gonna get the biggest piece of the pie. It wouldnt surprise me one bit if 'the guy' to have in any of those backfields changes multiple times throughout the year.

be careful there wil, foot may adopt a budding star QB (13yr old) from a troubled family just to groom him so he can win the MBBRL in '19-'20 season, lol.

That's just crazy talk, Foot.  Why in the world would you want to do that, other than it fits in with the Foot's Super Crazy and Insane Rankings Period right before pre-season?

The earliest I've ever drafted in any league is after the 2nd week of pre-season games because one guy was taking a 3-week vacation.  And most of the time I draft after the 3rd game or even the weekend right before the season starts.  Why do it that way, you ask, since you think it would be more of a challenge?  For the simple reason that injures occur.  I've seen to many posters on here who whine and moan that their #1 draft pick is out for the year.  And why?  Because their league was insane enough to draft in June or July right after their fantasy website opened up for business.

If you ask me, it's more of a challenge to draft right before the season starts.  Everyone has mostly the same info and the same top 20-30 players at each position.  It takes more research to find out who those top performing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers are and finding those sleepers.  If you draft before preseason or early-preseason, it's just a guessing game and who got luckiest with an unknown player here and there.  Fantasy Football shouldn't be about guessing.  It should be about determining players' fantasy values and their overall worth in your scoring sytem.

The season starts Wednesday, September 5, so we'll probably have our draft within a couple of days of August 20th (early enough to be of interest on the boards, but not so early we don't have a clue).
Right on point there, Wil.  If it's open for debate and vote, I'd like to request not until after Week 2 of the preseason or later.

I'm drafting Tom Brady's son, Benjamin.  He's only one and a half years old, but I'm willing to wait.  Tongue out

Well that's fine Duff but humbly disagree. It seems like every year before preseason starts there are a bunch of players I know are going to be major players and huge steals, and mostly under the radar. Then the preseason starts and they show what they can do to everyone and they become everyone's sleeper targets. But for the sake of injury I have no problem with eaiting till the end so everone knows who's who.

Im on board with most everyone else on here (sorry foot) as far as draft date. typical draft, in the middle of preseason at the earliest.  I usually take part in a free league or two, or even a mock draft or two within the first couple of preseason games, just to get a feel for where certain players are going. I really look for/pay attention to rounds 6-12, after the marquee names are gone. Now if Foot wants to do a mock draft sometime earlier, I am all for it. If anything, it will help pass the time until the real draft, and give us something to talk about for awhile. I made the mistake of doing a mock draft and letting a buddy watch last year. He was a rookie fantasy player, going into his 2nd year, and I needed him to round out our keeper league. Come draft day, he ended up drafting about 10 of the players that I took in my mock draft in our keeper league, and rode them to a 3rd place finish, lol! Of course, Newton off of waivers in week 2 helped him out a lot as well.

It seems like every year before preseason starts there are a bunch of players I know are going to be major players and huge steals, and mostly under the radar.
Foot - Id have to argue the opposite here. If anything, I think waiting until after a few preseason games gives avid fantasy owners MORE names to think about, thus increasing the 'sleeper pool' and possibly leaving the guys you have been targeting prior to preseason available to you. EX - last season an owner in my PPR league must have just read the article (i think by your boy Dave R) that Montario Hardesty was the handcuff to get, since Hillis was having contract issues with the Browns. So he thought he was being smart and grabbed him, leaving the next guy to take Ben Tate (who HAD to be higher on everyone's board than montario) who not only performed well with Foster out, but continued to see 10-15 touches a game and was probably the top RB3 in every league (barring DSproles, but thats it).

So i think it can definitely work both ways. A guy like AJ Green increased his value in preseason last year, and ppl took notice, but again, you could argue both sides all day, and no one would be completely correct.
