Heat (who else?) front-runners for Dampier

The Miami Heat emerged Wednesday as the front-runner to land free-agent center Erick Dampier, who was released a day earlier by Charlotte in a luxury-tax move, a person with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com.

Dampier can't officially arrange a visit with the Heat until he clears waivers, but it is believed that Heat president Pat Riley views Dampier as a key supporting piece to add to his new Big Three of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Dampier, 35, would be an upgrade over Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire and would fill the final missing role for Miami's championship run.

Miami can only offer Dampier the veteran's minimum of about $1.4 million, but it is believed that Dampier is open to accepting less money for the chance to compete for a championship. Among the handful of teams with the full mid-level exception of $5.8 million available, the only potential championship contender is Dallas -- and a reunion with the Mavericks is difficult to fathom. Other teams that have expressed interest are Houston, Toronto and New Jersey, with the Rockets apparently hottest in their pursuit.

The Bobcats released Dampier Wednesday to get out from under his non-guaranteed $13 million salary. Part of the concern, according to a source, was being on the hook for Dampier's salary if he got injured.

PLEASE STOP - Cuban IS ALL ABOUT THE SPOTLIGHT.  Which is why he whines about every thing and has to be in the middle of everything.  Same with Jerry Jones.  Must be the water in Dallas.
Yeah you're right the Heat guys have egos - we had 2 other superstars, LeBron and Bosh decide to leave their team where they were the main men to come play with the Heat.  Yeah, they have biiiiiiiigggg egos!  Gimme a break!!  Just sit back and enjoy the show this year in South Beach, ok?  LOL.

He'll provide 6 fouls, rest for the main rotation guys and eat up space in the middle.  Ask Boston why they picked the O'Neals.

Actually it has no substance as your knowledge of how NBA contracts and salary cap rules work.  He has been cut, and had a contract structured that if he was cut that 13 million was not guaranteed, to put it in simpler terms for you he ain't getting that money.  Now he might be able to get a couple million dollar contract from a team at the most, no one is going to pay him anything close to 13 million a year, I mean this is Eric freakin Dampier.  If he signs with the heat he is at most taking a million or 2 million paycut, which for a guy that has played for so long in the NBA (and been overpaid for so long), that is really not that much of a sacrifice to win a championship.
You are obviously just a Heat hater.  Dampier is not great, (or good really), but for the Heat it is a great addition that fortifies their area of weakness.  When you have 2 of the best 4 players in the league and Chris Bosh as your third option, all you need is soem shooting and some big men to D and rebound and foul.

destiny_driven,

Your post is the first one that has substance.  all that needs to be said is he really going to pay 8 million dollars for the chance at a championship?  Would be the biggest moron in the NBA

The Heat are more than welcome to have Erica.  He sucks.

A look at me owner?  Are you for real?  You dont think the heat has a look at me team?  In terms of arrogance Mark Cuban is not even in close to approaching the level of Bosh, James, and Wayde.  U Fool.

Dampier will be a good signing by the Heat because he knows his role will be to rebound and play defense. It is the role that he has filled his entire career so he is very capable of filling the void that the Heat had at center.

Ask the Celtics how many centers you need.

Cleveland is Dampier's best option.

Sure, Dampier can go to Miami and play for under a million dollars this season, but how much is the chance to win a ring worth?  It is really worth taking an 8.5 million dollar pay cut?  No ring is worth that much money.  At 35 years old, can he really afford financially to throw away one of his few remaining seasons without being paid fairly?  Hey, this guy has a limited shelf life remaining and he has to make the most he can while he is able.  Going to Miami is playing 82 games, plus playoffs for peanuts.  Going thru all of the travel and being away from loved ones, for what?  Being paid peanuts?

Cleveland is the best fit for Dampier if he wants to play and get paid.  Cleveland is hurting for a center, having lost both Zydrunas and O'Neal to free agency.  They only have one true center in Ryan Hollins, but he has been nothing but a reserve the past four seasons.  Varejao is really a power forward and isn't equipped to do the job in the middle physically.   The Cavs have plenty of cap space, after losing LeLoser James big contract.  So, if Dampier wants to play and get paid well, the Cavs are probably his best option.

As a Maverick fan, I can with confidence say that Lebron, Wade, Bosh, and whoever else they want to play on this team can not carry a team that dampier is on. He is awful. He is giant waste of space.
