Heat add 'Big Z' to supporting cast

The Heat took another important step toward assembling a supporting cast for their Big Three, agreeing to terms with former Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the decision confirmed to CBSSports.com.

Miami has used the cap space created by Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh accepting less than maximum salaries in the first year of their contracts, plus the salary dump of Michael Beasley, to add shooter Mike Miller, Juwan Howard and Ilgauskas while retaining forward Udonis Haslem. Miami officials met with Lakers point guard Derek Fisher, but the five-time champion elected to return to L.A.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer first reported Miami's agreement with Ilgauskas, a longtime teammate and friend of James. The Cavs had a standing offer on the table for Ilgauskas, who decided to join James in Miami for the chance to win the first championship of his 12-year career.

The Heat have several more roster spots to fill and are able to offer mostly the veteran's minimum. Miller fit into Beasley's $5 million slot, and the money for Haslem and Ilgauskas resulted from Wade accepting a first-year salary of $14.2 million -- about $2.4 million less than the max -- according to sources. James and Bosh took first-year salaries of $14.5 million.

Heat add 'Big Z' to supporting cast

I totally agree, they should not be the favorites. Even Orlando should be ahead of them in the East. Good thing is D-Wade and the rest of the guys know who should be the favorites (Lakers) and will stay hungry through out the season. I think LA has the better team for the moment and match up well against the Heat's big 3 but Miami has done a great job filling in role players too. We'll see come playoff time if they have what it takes.

Heat add 'Big Z' to supporting cast

I had to go here first! Are you on crack???? Haslem and Bosh better than Gasol Odom!!! You do realize that Bosh wont put up the same numbers he put up in Toronto? He becomes the 3rd option. Plus head to head Gasol is better than Bosh. Gasol is a better passer, shot blocker, and can score with both hands. Bosh can score but he does nothing else better than Gasol. Now you talk about Haslem vs Odom! Not even worth the conversation! I think you need to look at last year's stats between Odom and Haslam. Odom was .9 pts. and 1.7 reb. better, in four more minutes of playing time - and that's on a higher scoring team.

Who do you think got double teamed more, Gasol or Bosh?  Uh, Bosh.  Don't think Bagnani is striking fear in the hearts of anyone.  So Gasol gets his while everyone is focusing on Kobe.  Bosh gets his as the main man.

This is not that close.

This tells me you know nothing about basketball! You really think the Heat would start Haslem over Mike Miller??? Never. Haslem at the 3 is a liability! Ask Boston about Ron Artest. Haslem will be out on the perimeter chasing Artest leaving Gasol and Bynum against Bosh and Bynum. Plus you forgot we have a Hall of Fame coach that will adjust to whatever they do. This is July and you assume what they will do. Right, with the big three in there, the Heat will want to start . . . another scorer, NOT!  Miller comes in to spell James or Wade.  If you think the Heat will game plan the Lakers by worrying about Artest scoring, you're nuts.  If he leads the team, the Lakers lose.  The Heat can ignore the Laker PG, and double someone on the block.

Do you watch basketball?

I dont know if you got the news flash, but everyone outside of LA and Miami stop caring about the NBA.....LBJ once said he was going to bring the NBA back....well he just killed it for 98% of the country.  Its hard to believe the NBA could be more irrelevant than it already is (except for a few games in the Finals), but it has.  Way to go LeBron, you just freed up about 6 hours a week, now I can work on my golf game.

Oh... a jilted New Yorker.

Cry me a river.

I'm sure if he had gone to NY with Stoudemire, that wouldn't have killed the NBA. Right?

And New Yorkers don't make up 98% of the country; you only think you do.

Chucklife, your post is ABSURD!  lol   You clearly are delusional about the game of basketball.

Boston won a championship just 2 short years ago with NOTHING down low.  NOTHING!    Now you post "THESE DAYS"   You clearly have a desire for the Heat not to win but sorry pal.....the bums rush of the NBA is about to begin.

1st, you make and absurd post that the Boston-LA Series "SHOWED US"  lol    Boston's offense totally broke down in a game 7 you fool. lol  An Old Boston team with Big Baby and Perkins for "BIGS" gave the mighty Lakers all they wanted.

Gasol is not as good as Bosh....PERIOD.  The Lakers have NO ONE who can guard Lebron or Wade.  Haslem won't even be a starter! lol

Take your Delusional post down the street pal.

You assume that it will be difficult for teams to do. You havent even seen them play together. And if you play an up tempo game that wont ggive them more opportunities it will actually give them less especially for the one who is playing point but remember they said they dont care about stats. They actually have 5 more rings than Lebron and 4 more than Wade. No they are not better individually but as a team in the playoff they are absolutely better. Like I said Championships are won by players with Heart, Determination and Killer Instinct Not Just Talent alone. With that said Kobe/Fish have way more of that pumping through their veins than Wade and Lebron! Yal havent even watched this team play yet and your crowning yorself Champs. Just discounting the 2-time defending Champs and I guess every team in the Eastern Conference. I Want A Heat/Lakers Final so they can shut up all this talk cause thats all it is! Plus one more thing How do you think Miami's young head coach will do with Riley breathing down his neck the whole season and at the first sign of trouble taking over

Here I thought the problem with the Heat last year was not enough talent, but in fact it was heart and determination. Please compare the talent of the Heat (or the Cavaliars) last year and the Lakers and you will see the reason the Lakers won and the Heat did not. Had absolutely nothing to do with heart and determination. I know Wade has as much heart and determination as anyone in the league. Wade and Lebron have not teamed up together so all we can do right now is compare their talents and you will not be able to convince me that Fisher/Kobe are more talented than Wade/Lebron.

I am certainly not won saying that they will definitely win or even get to the championship, but I do like their chances.

Spoelstra has done well the last few years and will have some very talented players to work with.

How much better is Bosh passing/assists going to be when passing it out to Wade or Lebron.

And if you play an up tempo game that wont ggive them more opportunities it will actually give them less especially for the one who is playing point but remember they said they dont care about stats.

How does playing an up tempo game give you less chances for scoring and assists?

Bring it on Lakers, the worn out, over the hill Celtics led by double digits in the second half of game seven in the finals before running out of gas. The Heat will dominate and have Kobe crying again like he was a few years back when the Lakers went out in the first round two seasons in a row.

everybody is matching up the lakers and the heat players. oh the lakers have too much size. their big men will dominate. well listen every time down the floor the heat have three mismatches  every time they come down the floor. kobe is great but he can't guard wade look at the head to head numbers and they will tell u the story. lebron presents a mismatch to whomever the lakers attempt to guard him with. kobe too small, artest (my boy) not fast enough, odem not fast enough. and gasol couldnt even guard kevin garnett when he faced him up to the basket so how in the world do you think he can guard bosh facing up when bosh has range out to the three point line..  come guys lets be serious here. the only really arguement you can apply to the heat is that you think that there will be chemestry issues cause if they dont then how do you guard them.. you just cant
