Paul Pierce is officially staying in green-and-white, finalizing his four-year, $61 million contract with the Celtics Saturday night, a person with knowledge of the agreement told CBSSports.com.

Pierce had opted out of the final year of his contract, which would've paid him $21.5 million, in part to give the Celtics flexibility to retain free agent Ray Allen and make a run at another championship with coach Doc Rivers, who announced this week he was returning for the final year of his contract. Pierce, 32, accepted less than the maximum the Celtics could have paid him as a 10-plus-year veteran, which was $96 million over four years. But a person familiar with the situation said the fourth year was fully guaranteed, which had been a sticking point in the negotiations.

Now, the Celtics will focus on retaining Allen, a move that would keep the Big Three -- and point guard Rajon Rondo -- intact for a run at the franchise's 18th championship. Also Saturday night, NBA.com's David Aldridge reported that forward Rasheed Wallace -- who informed the team after the NBA Finals that he planned to retire -- is possibly reconsidering that decision.

no, il just ask the aging kobe, im sure he'll say the 'old geezers' ran out of steam cuz they're old, if kg could save his energy instead of talking so much crap on the court, maybe you guys coulda pulled it off, if pierce wouldn't have pulled an iverson and drove everytime, throwing his head back and prayin the refs save him, maybe you coulda won, the scariest/best player on your team in rondo, kg and pierce are so overrated, and when it counts they run out of steam ( nice way of saying choke).

To all who call the Celtics old/chokers

If Perkins hadn't been hurt, the superior heart and soul of the Celtics would have overcome the gutless, over-talented Lakers.  And don't come back with a Bynum comment to even things out, the guy has been hurt 3 years running so another owey for the Finals means nothing.  The team played all year without him.  Heck, they stole Gasol because they knew he couldn't last a full season.

The Celtics simply ran out of steam, there was no choke involved.  Not to mention the L.A. based officiating team that called 6 points worth of horrible calls in the last 2 minutes.  Don't confuse the truth with sour grapes, in more ways than one.

Ask the youthful Lebron and Howard how they feel about the "geezers".

tomahawk1999 i didn't think of that, ya i guess in the long run he is making a lot more, on th surface he looks like a hero, but really he is just geting more money out of boston, and stupid celtics need to realize he is almost done, starting handing out your money to someone who doesn't have the facial hair of a 13 yr old

bstromer (or should I just say "bs"?):

Words are easy to type and epithets easy to sling, but getting the words to gibe with fact, well, in your case, that's a climb up K2.

We would just like to say that we are very happy Mr. Pierce has decided to return to the Celtics next year. With more members than any other team in the NBA, we feel a special kinship with the club from Boston and hope they remain together for years to come.

I wish they could sign Boozer for a couple years to add some scoring punch around the low post. Insurance for the man (Garnett) with all of the bucks and fragile knees. Plus Boozer is a great passer. I bet he's really hungry for a title. I don't think Rasheed has enough game left to keep him around.

If the C's keep Allen he'll have to be used in a diminished role off the bench as a 6th man sharp shooter. At his age he wears down in the stretch.

Paul Pierce will be remembered in Boston long after his career has ended for class acts just like this. There is no question as to why he is the captain and unquestioned leader of this team. It is so refreshing to see a professional athlete realize that the legacy they leave is sometimes more important than how obscenely high their checking account grows.

Even signing Ray Allen, the Celts should still have enough wiggle room to build a nice supporting cast around them. Getting Brian Scalabrini off of the cap alone helps out a lot!

There are still reasons to be optimistic about the Celtics in Boston. Thanks for one more ride, Doc.
