Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

Posted on: April 18, 2010 12:18 am
The story of Game 1 of the Heat-Celtics first-round series should have been the way Boston stifled Dwyane Wade in the second half and found the defensive dominance that led them to the 2008 title. The Celtics were back Saturday night -- until Kevin Garnett's elbow got in the way, twice, with 39 seconds left.

Now, the question is a legitimate one: Will KG be suspended for Game 2?

Another question is, should he be?

Taking all the usual factors into consideration, I think the answers are no, and no. But after beating the Heat 85-76 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series, these are questions the Celtics shouldn't have to be contemplating.

You've seen the replays by now, and if nothing else, it should be clear that this was just an example of Garnett's typical bluster and machismo going too far. Hindered by a leg injury and all that mileage, Garnett has become a caricature of himself -- a woofing, cussing, emotional tinder box that on Saturday night kindled a fire that couldn't have been more unnecessary.

Anyone who knows Quentin Richardson -- and Garnett should know him by now, Q-Rich has been in the NBA for nine years -- would know that he approached the sideline in front of the Miami bench strictly out of concern for fallen Celtic Paul Pierce. As Pierce lay writhing in pain after sustaining a stinger on his right shoulder, Richardson immediately walked over to check on him.

"I just thought Q was standing over him talking some nonsense," Garnett said afterward.

KG, taking issue with somebody talking nonsense? Please.

Garnett immediately shoved Richardson out of the way, a course of action with which Richardson, to no one's surprise, took issue. Talking and jostling ensued, and things escalated into a full-scale shoving match immediately after Garnett connected with a vicious elbow to Richardson's face.

Garnett was assessed two technical fouls -- one for the initial shove and the talking, and a second for the elbow -- and was ejected. The issue now is whether the league office will/should take further action against the Celtics' big mouthed big man.

A few factors to consider: No one other than Pierce was injured in the fracas. The benches didn't clear, although it was difficult to determine what was going on with the Miami bench since Pierce had fallen into it. No punches were thrown, as far as I could see on the various replays.

It would be perfectly reasonable for league disciplinary czar Stu Jackson to conclude that the only harm in this situation was punished by the game officials, who dealt with Garnett appropriately after viewing the replays. But there are a couple of things I'd be concerned about if I were Doc Rivers or Danny Ainge: The league often considers whether contact is "unnecessary" or "excessive," and whether there is a windup before contact was made. Garnett's second elbow could reasonably fit all three criteria.

It also satisfied another definition of conduct that often is punished further by the league office: It escalated a tense situation into something else -- a full-fledged shoving match that easily could have resulted in punches being thrown.

The fact that it didn't result in punches being thrown is good for the Celtics. But the fact that it could have, I think, means that the next 18 hours or so will be accompanied by the appropriate amount of nervousness in New England.

All things considered, I don't think Garnett will be or should be suspended for Game 2. But if he is, I wouldn't object. And Garnett would only have himself to blame.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

He was suspended but, the Celtics made a point last night. Garnett or not, they are going to be a factor through out the play offs. We might not make it to the finals but, we will not make it easy for anyone else either.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

He  should be suspended, even though he is garbage. I hate him more then  any other athlete in the world. When he yelled anything is possible was the worst thing ive seen in sporting history. Lebron trying to rap eminem being a close second.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

Excellent post CJ, I thought I was going crazy reading many of these posts, when I saw the replay I couldn't believe how Q was wading into the fracas and then he was the person who gave the 1st hard shove after it looked like KG was telling him to back off. He then came forward aggressively and KG popped him. I don't have a problem with them tossing KG out of that game. But if a suspension is handed out, it seems to me that both Q and KG would merit an equal suspension (Q for being the agressor- he had know business being in the middle of everything in the 1st place, and KG for the elbow).

Richardson was not going over to see if Pierce was ok.  HE even said so.  Not only crowding in but taunting.  KG nudged him to get out of the way, and he kept yacking.  Then with 3 heat players pulling at him from behind, KG threw his elbows out to clear them away, and when he did he hit Richardson.  Only a hater could watch the replay and not admit that Garnett was not even looking at Richardson.

If he gets suspended for 1 game for his careless elbow, so be it.  He knows he needs to keep his cool.

But at least 3 Heat players left their bench to get involved, and that is against the rules also.

Richardson was clearly the instigator and Berger ought to get some facts before he annoints someone a saint.  Richardson is even tweeting more crap about pierce and garnett today.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

I totally agree.  Hey Berger, have you been watching the NBA in the last decade.  If you had you would know that Q is a punk, Q is an instigator and he can't stand the Celtics, especially Paul Pierce.  It is clear from a video review of Q's behavior and his own post-game comments that he was not going to see if Pierce was okay.  If anything it looked as if he contemplated stepping over him to get to his bench.

Dracula8248 r u moron Richardson was going over to Pierce too see if he was ok,  and then KG comes over and elbows him in the face, u must not seen it correctly but u need to go see the replay and when Pierce got knocked dpwn it wasn't intentionally at all man ok.  So i hop KG gets suspened for that because it was uncalled for and he had no right doing that period.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

Kevin Garnett should not be suspended at all. It was an accident that he elbowed him, but Quentin Richardson deserved to be elbowed, because before this incident, Quentin Richardson shoved Paul Pierce to the floor and he didn't get called for a foul. And if they do suspend Garnett, they have to suspended Quentin Richardson, Dwane Wade, and the 3 bench players who jumped off the bench. And remember that 0 punches were thrown.

But of course, none of the Miami players will get suspended and Kevin Garnett will get suspended. It's just the way the league works. Everyone who isn't a Celtics fan hates the Celtics, and they love to see them lose. Miami will still lose game 2 anyway which will upset the league, then Kevin Garnett nwill make sure that Miami loses the next two games by double digits.

Will Garnett be suspended for Game 2?

As a Celtics fan, all I could say was "How stupid can KG be?"  Yes he should be suspended!  Regardless of the history between Pierce and Richardson, KG should have acted with more self-control.
Now, with Richardson going to check on Pierce "out of concern"; come on, that's hard to believe!!  Play was stopped and he should have stayed out of the way.
KG's impending suspension should only affect the length of this series.  The way the C's are playing, the Cavs are already licking their chops.
