Thorn: No Pitino contact

Posted on: February 11, 2010 11:15 am

Rod Thorn was packing his bags Thursday morning in an attempt to make it to Dallas for All-Star weekend. First, he had a situation to deal with -- shooting down the notion that Louisville coach Rick Pitino had contacted the Nets to express interest in being their next coach.

"I'm good friends with Rick and have been for long time," Thorn said. "He's never reached out to me and I've never reached out to him about this. He's never indicated to me that he’s unhappy where he is or has intentions of coming back to the NBA. I've certainly never heard about it and never had any conversation with him about it. If he had approached one of our owners or somebody on his behalf had approached one of our owners, I'm sure they say something to me about it."

This is the second time in a few months that Pitino's name has surfaced regarding an NBA job, which most people around the league see for what it is -- a desperate attempt on Pitino's part to keep an escape route open from Louisville, where he's been dogged by scandal and overshadowed by rival Kentucky and coach John Calipari. Pitino's operatives floated his name for the Sacramento job last summer, but there was never any interest from the Kings, who hired Paul Westphal.

Pitino himself denied the New York Daily News' report Thursday of his interest in the Nets' job. But the goal was accomplished; the more Pitino's name is associated with an NBA comeback, the more likely it is that some desperate, clueless owner will hire him.

The Nets, who are 4-48 and on pace to equal the worst record in NBA history, have bigger fish to fry. The purchase of the team by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov is expected to come up for a vote at the next Board of Governor's meeting, and the team is trying to make progress on its move to Brooklyn.

Damn, nothing good to pass around! Thanks for taking my post with humor Mike, that's how I meant it.

I think if there ever was any shot at the Nets getting LeBron, their 4 win season so far as put that to rest. I'd love to see the Knicks get him, but I think you're right that NY talks about it so much, it's not really even clear he wants to play here. It's going to be awfully hard for him to leave Cleveland .

mel I don't know the cap situation with the Nets that well so I'm not sure if they can get him but all you've heard for the most part is Lebron is going to be a Net/Knick! Thinking on it that's probably because the NY area won't stop talking about it.

Also mel if I had something good I'd pass it to you

Why would he go back to the NBA and for the Nets? He's a great college coach, chances are the Nets wont get the fist pick anyway. Pitino will only leave Louisville for a better college job. The whole Celtics thing really turned him away from the NBA.

Yeah and Clippers 2010 World Champs ? I like the Nets, Lopez and Harris are good guys who are going to be a great tendem in the future. But i don't buy on this LeBron James thing. Next, the first pick overall? Well right now, i don't think that Wall is the better prospect because of how he is playing right now with Kentucky. Demarcus Cousin, his 'mate at UK is on top of the Draft chart right now. And even if Wall is the best player in the 2010 Draft, you have to win the lottery first, and i really don't trust the Nets' chances ^^.

Pitino was very successful with the Knicks (Atlantic Division Champions) and moderately successful with the Celtics before he came (imporved from 15-67 before he came to 35-47 or 12-22 when he left). Too bad the last place Celtics didn't get the first pick in the draft his 1st year (Tim Duncan).

However, Pitino likes the relatively low stress job at Louisville. He has a young team with a bunch of big name commitments. His 2011 recruiting class could end up being #1 in the nation. He is already rich and the people who liked him before the scandal still like him and the people who didn't like him still don't.

He has no reason to leave. Unless the NBA money is obscene, he won't.

No Pitino contact? I guess this shows Nets fans the team is interested in winning some games in this decade. Hey if the Nets get Lebron then they will easily be the top team in the East. Harris, Douglas-Roberts, Lebron, Yi, and Lopez is a scary good starting 5. Not to mention if they get the 1st pick and Wall comes out. Then you could move Harris to SG make DR your 6th man and have Wall start at the point. Nets for title in 2012 if everything works out right?

Give it a rest

Can we please stop hearing these stories!?

Pitino will stay in NCAAB (where he belongs).  Pitino is better suited for the college game.  He was successfull at Boston U, Providence, UK and Louisville...not so much with the Knicks and Celtics.

Pitino is to old to go back to the NBA, he will remain at Louisville for another 5 or so years, before hanging up the pinstripe suits for good.

If there was any contact between Pitino's people and the Nets it was more than likely an attempt for Pitino to meet with his favorite player in resent years (Terance Williams) while Louisville plays a couple games in the area (Thursday night at St Johns and Sunday at Syracuse).
