No surprise: Rubio staying overseas (UPDATE)

It took David Kahn three trips to Spain to learn what he essentially already knew: Ricky Rubio will remain overseas for two more years.

That much seemed apparent on draft night, when Rubio expressed as little enthusiasm for playing in Minnesota as a human being could possibly express. Kahn, the house-cleaning GM of the Timberwolves, knew when he selected Rubio with the fifth pick that having him on the roster this season was a long shot. So it goes.

Yahoo! Sports first reported Monday night that Rubio and agent Dan Fegan have agreed to a six-year deal with Regal FC Barcelona. It was the Barcelona club -- and not Kahn's Timberwolves -- that after weeks of uncertainty was able to negotiate a buyout with Rubio's Spanish team, JKV Joventut, a high-level coaching source confirmed to CBSSports.com. Naturally, there is an out clause in Rubio's deal with Barcelona after two years. This means that the T-Wolves are going to have to do exactly what Kahn said on draft night he was willing to do: Wait until Rubio is 20 years old before seeing him in Minnesota.

So if nothing else, at least the Rubio situation is resolved. At least the T-Wolves can move forward with a perfectly good explanation for drafting point guard Jonny Flynn one pick after Rubio. Say what you want about Kahn -- and plenty have and will continue to -- but he didn't budge from his draft night premise that he was willing to wait a couple of years for Rubio. So Rubio will mature and get better -- albeit against sub-NBA competition -- and Kahn's team will begin the rebuilding process with a very capable point guard in Flinn. Can the two play together in the same backcourt in 2011-12? Time will tell. But in the meantime, Kahn moves forward with a formidable asset in Rubio. Even if he never plays a single game in Minnesota.

Kahn is quickly becoming the most mysterious executive in the NBA, tearing a page straight from the book written by his mentor, Donnie Walsh. He is humorless and needs to brush up on his people skills -- despite the fact that he's a former member of the media. (Maybe this explains why he is a former member.) But I'll give him credit for this much: It took a certain amount of gumption to welcome a controversy like this with the very first and most important decision of his regime. Whether it ultimately works out or not is very much an unknown. Say Kahn is in over his head if you want; you might ultimately be correct. But I have no problem giving Kahn credit for being unafraid of Fegan and all the contractual entanglements that came with Rubio. Enjoy Barcelona, Ricky. See you in 2011.

I told everyone that this was going to happen!!

Rubio is a joke, and I hope his NBA dream never comes true... He is self-centered, and arrogant. This whole thing could've been solved, and his whole family (including him, and his agent) wanted him to stay in Europe or go to a "Big" market team..

I'm glad he stayed overseas.. I hope the T-Wolves never give him a contract, and he never sees the likes of the NBA. I can't wait to see J. Flynn on the court.. He shows a lot of promise, and it will nice to have someone who actually wants to be in Minnesota!

Would it have been nice for Rubio to be here next year yes but its not the worst thing that hes staying. Flynn gets a shot to show his stuff for 2 years. If he turns out to be a stud than great we have a point guard and a Rubio whos entering his prime and is great trade bait, if not we have Rubio to fall back on, not a bad backup plan huh.

Also for those who think Rubio didn't want to come to Minnesota that is false. He has stated a number of times in the past couple weeks that he would love to play for the T-Wolves the only problem was that the buyout to his contract was too much money, if he would have been drafted top 3 he would have been fine and could have payed it but when he slipped to 5 in the draft he lost some money and couldn't afford the buyout. He had no control over this situation.

The problem was there wasn't an impact player TO draft (aside from Flynn). They can trade this rights whenever they want and get who knows what for it.  He's 18 and his stock isn't going down. Next year is the big free agent class and after that dust settles they will be holding an asset that they could flip.  Drafting a project at 5 would have been a wasted pick, drafting an asset is never a waste.

It amazes me...we can not draft 18 year olds out of high school that want to play for any team in the NBA, but we can draft 18 year old egomaniacs out of Europe that can hold a team hostage and then flip us the bird and return to Europe.  I hope Johnny Flynn lights it up, and I hope Ricky Rubio finds life a bit tougher overseas.

the timberwolves are in no position to wait on a top 5 pick, they would have been better off trading it or drafting a player who could help them now. the reason for drafting high is to get an impact player someone who can develop and help a team now. this makes no sense for the wolves its a wasted pick

No surprise: Rubio staying overseas

Remember this was considered a very weak draft and what they did is stockpile an already highly thought of pg in lieu of drafting a whom really?  There was Blake Griffen at #1 and then a handful of guys who MIGHT evolve into something worthwhile.  The Wolves are years away from contending for a playoff spot as it is and had they drafted anyone else they would still be years away.  Two years from now his value may be even higher in which case they will have pleanty of options, more so than the alternative of selecting someone else in my opinion.

And I don't hate you - I've written positive words about a column of yours before. But this column makes me crazy.

No surprise: Rubio staying overseas

So essentially the Timberwolves get absolutely nothing from having the 4th pick in the draft - for at least two years - and yet you write an article that praises Kahn for this. Seriously, what in God's name are you talking about? I lost several hundred brain cells as a result of reading this column and that is on you, my friend.

Flynn not Flinn!  I'm glad Flynn is going to get the chance to be the main pg in Minnesota.  Who knows in 2 years The T'Wolves might get to use Rubio as trade bait.
