Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

The Dallas Mavericks, who have agreed to bring Jason Kidd back with a three-year, $25 million deal, are trying to work out a sign-and-trade with Toronto for Shawn Marion, CBSSports.com has learned.

The deal could provide an alternative for the Raptors to renouncing Marion's rights in a bid to clear cap space for its addition of Hedo Turkoglu. But sign-and-trades are particularly complicated, especially in this case, because Toronto is reluctant to take back salary, a person familiar with the situation said.

When the Raptors got a verbal agreement from Turkoglu, who reneged on a commitment to the Trail Blazers, it was contingent on Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo making several roster moves to make room for the five-year, $53 million contract Turkoglu is eligible to sign on Wednesday. The simplest scenario is to renounce the rights to Marion, Carlos Delfino, and Anthony Parker. But a sign-and-trade -- particularly for Marion, who still has some value -- also would be a palatable option as long as it doesn't complicate the Turkoglu signing. At this point, the source cautioned, the talks are stuck on the issue of how much salary Toronto would have to take back and the deal "may or may not happen."

UPDATE: Marion was among the highest-paid players in the league last season at $17.8 million. But like many free agents this summer, he's been forced to adjust his expectations for the level of interest in his services and the amount teams are willing to pay. The Knicks, for all their largesse and resources, wooed Kidd with -- sigh -- a two- or three-year offer at the mid-level exception of $5.6 million per. Kidd turned it down and stayed in Dallas. There has been a lot of talk about prized restricted free agents David Lee and Paul Millsap, but to this point, no offers to back it up.

Marion, 31, has gone from being a valued trade chip who was sent from Phoenix to Miami for Shaquille O'Neal, to a player whose expiring contract was more valuable than he was in heading to Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal. Now, he is not only running out of O'Neals, he is running out of options. Marion can only hope that interest from several contenders -- Cleveland also is believed to have interest -- could provide him a winning situation, if not a huge pay day. Given the environment, it is incomprehensible that Marion would get more than half of his 2008-09 salary in a sign-and-trade or on the open market.

UPDATE: If Toronto and Dallas work out a deal, Jerry Stackhouse almost certainly would be headed to Toronto because only $2 million of his $7 million salary for next season is guaranteed. Also, you should be following me on Twitter, because you could've found out about this story before I posted it. This news is like so-a-half-hour-ago.

UPDATE: A second person familiar with the situation said the Marion-to-Dallas scenario was being pushed by Mavs owner Mark Cuban and Marion's agent, Dan Fegan. Dallas, the person said, was trying to involve either Oklahoma City or Memphis as a third team to facilitate Toronto's need to clear cap space for Turkoglu.

UPDATE: While there is interest in Marion among several contenders seeking an agile transition player and 3-point shooter, his potential landing spots are limited to teams willing and able to pay him more than the mid-level exception of about $5.6 million -- unless that's all Fegan is able to get for him. That would appear to take a team like Cleveland out of the mix for Matrix.

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

This would be a good scenario for the Raptors as well. Getting a player like Stackhouse is exactly what the Raptors need and if it can work out in a sign and trade for Marion, that would be huge. It all depends on cap space of course, but the Raptors could be surprisingly dangerous next year with a starting lineup of:

PG- Jose Calderon (solid when healthy)
SG- Demar Derozan/Jerry Stackhouse (this would be an ideal environment for Derozan to grow into the NBA)
SF- Hedo Turkoglu (versatile player who takes the scoring pressure off CB)
PF- Chris Bosh (franchise player who needs to be persuaded Toronto can compete to stay in Canada)
C- Andrea Bargnani (X-factor. If Bargnani continues to grow into a star player, Toronto could be scary with the three 6'10 plus front liners)

The reason having a guy like Stackhouse around to either start or split time at the SG position takes the pressure off the rookie Derozan. From what I've read, it sounds like the rookie is the expected starter at this time, and it would help him a great deal if he had a veteran like Stackhouse to learn from and be his insurance policy.

With the addition of Reggie Evans to shore up the front court (Turkoglu could also slide up to the PF for a spell), and Kris Humphries as depth, they should be improved in the post for next season. What Colangelo needs to do is find a SG/SF type like Stackhouse, and hopefully a second player of that description because their roster is lacking in that area. I'm not sure how I feel about Marcus Banks/Roko Ukic as the back up PG's to the injury prone Calderon, but it would be awfully tough for Colangelo to rid himself of Banks and upgrade at that position.

I was initially against the idea of the Raps committing that much money to Turkoglu, and losing the rights to Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker and Carlos Delfino. The key in that group was Marion, and he wants far too much money. Turkoglu is a more valueable player, and adds a great dynamic to this roster. Parker is a player who isn't good enough to do what Toronto has asked of him for the last couple seasons. He will likely thrive coming off the bench for another team, but the Raps wisely are moving on from him. From what I've seen from him he just isn't a good enough player to be in the starting lineup of an NBA team and he is reportedly looking for a decent paycheque. Colangelo needs to find a couple players to fill the SG/SF bench roles, and hopefully have one of them capable of starting to take the pressure off Derozan and they are set. Hopefully Colangelo can find a way to be creative with the cap, but I have to applaud his efforts to build a team in Toronto. I didn't think he would lure Turkoglu, and he may be slightly overpaid, but you have to pay to get the top tier free agents.

Consider me impressed and expecting the Raps to compete for a seed below the giants (Cavs, Celtics). However, I don't think it's out of the question to consider the Raps able to compete with the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, and Chicago Bulls, especially given the way free agency has worked out for these clubs. The Magic were able to replace the loss of Hedo with Vince Carter, and that makes them dangerous in a different way than last season, but still solid nonetheless. The Hawks and Heat have been quiet, and the Bulls lost Ben Gordon, so it could be an ideal opportunity for Colangelo to pounce before Bosh leaves for free agency. Better yet, it's not out of the realm of possibility to hope for Bosh to stay given a strong roster and an opportunity to compete for a spot in the NBA finals. The Cavs are going to be tough, and the Celtics just got better with the addition of Rasheed Wallace, but the playoffs never come with guarantees for any roster. Overall, BC has done a pretty good job of mopping up the mesh made by Rob Babcock (aka. worst GM ever).

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

Who would want Marion for nothing right? Marion is still a good defender, athletic (not as athletic as once was), versatile (can play both the 3 and 4), and a great rebounder, he isn't anything worth a crap outside 8 feet but Dallas already has too many guys that rely on jumpers, Marrion is born to play with creative PG's like Nash and Kidd, Kidd will help revive him and will make Mavs much better on the break.Marrion isn't what he once was I admit that, but I think he could give 14-7 and great defensive effort (something RJ knows nothing about) and Mavs are happy, remember they aren't getting him for anyone basically.

Baffling Dallas moves.

I'm gonna blame the owner for this one for his insistence on winning at all costs.  I do not understand why the dallas mavericks would let a young player and future star in Devin Harris leave to overpay immensely for an aging and skill declining Jason Kidd!? Is Mark Cuban just in love with his celebrity and past success that he is blinded by his actual skills on the court?? Now to Marion, this is another player of whom I think the best years are behind him.  Shawn Marion is no longer to stat filling machine who runs the court and does all the little things well.  I think if Dallas signs him it's gonna be even more money wasted on a player that is not going to have a significant impact on this team.  If you want to look at a team that improved itself, look in the same state due south to San Antonio.  Richard Jefferson and the drafting of DuJaun Blair will have a greater impact to the Spurs than Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion will have to the Mavericks.  Great names, great past success but not the future and defintely not the key the mavericks seem to be blind to find.

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

Mavs should get a good SG for JHO and Damp, so this makes Mavs better at the starting 2 and 5, while keeps Jet off the bench, the defense looks so much stronger and offensivly looks a bit better

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

To get Marion without giving up Josh or Bass is huge win for Dallas.Marion can only play in an uptempo offense and if he goes to Dallas that is exactly what Carlisle & Cuban are saying that the Mavs are gonna run, run, run. He's also a good off ball defender. He probably won't put Dallas over the top but he definitely will improve them alot as long as he's healthy.Imagine 3 on 1 with Kidd,Josh,& Matrix coming at cha.

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

Ok FINALLY something to get excited about! I like the idea of pairing Matrix with Dirk in the frontcourt. This would then free up Dallas to trade Josh Howard and somebody else for a LEGITIMATE shooting guard. What about Iverson or Rip Hamilton? Can't imagine A.I. with J-Kidd but you never know, they both NEED a ring :)

Marion to Dallas? (UPDATE)

Matrix will help Dallas immensely. Especially if all Dallas has to give up for him is $$$
