Blazer talks cool; Heat, Bulls in hunt for Amare

Half the NBA is going West for All-Star weekend. The Suns are looking East when it comes to trading Amare Stoudemire.

Talks between the Suns and Portland Trail Blazers about Stoudemire have unraveled, CBSSports.com has learned. Phoenix is now focused on Eastern Conference teams -- and not just Chicago.

The Bulls remain a serious contender due to Drew Gooden's expiring contract and Larry Hughes' expiring deal next season, plus the largest expiring trade exception in the league ($5.2 million). But Miami is the latest team to emerge as a serious landing spot for Stoudemire, a person with direct knowledge of the talks said Wednesday night.

The Heat's involvement is sure to set off speculation about the possibility of Phoenix taking back Shawn Marion, who was traded to Miami for Shaquille O'Neal last February -- ground zero in the demolition of the Suns' 58-win-a-year success story over the past four seasons. But it is not believed that Suns managing partner Robert Sarver wants to go there. And Sarver's heavy hand in the process has become one of the key obstacles to Phoenix securing the best deal, according to two league executives -- one of whom described the situation as "dissension." Teams are getting mixed signals from Phoenix as far as what the Suns are looking to take back for Stoudemire, another executive said -- one version from Sarver and another from president Steve Kerr.

That isn't uncommon in NBA trade talks, especially on a deal as massive as this one. But it's just another impediment in Kerr's way as he tries to leverage an already difficult position. Some team executives have concerns about Stoudemire as a max player, given that anyone who acquires him would have to be prepared to re-sign him if he declines his player option after the 2009-10 season. Stoudemire's defensive deficiencies have been well documented, and he's a difficult player to commit to long-term given that he underwent microfracture knee surgery in 2005.

The deal Portland was discussing with Phoenix involved LaMarcus Aldridge, Jerryd Bayless, and Raef LaFrentz's $12.7 million expiring contract. "That deal is dead," the person familiar with the talks said. One reason could be that Portland is really looking to acquire an elite point guard, according to an NBA team executive. That begs the question of whether Portland G.M. Kevin Pritchard was asking for Steve Nash. But according to another rival executive, the Suns have made it clear that Nash, Grant Hill, and Leandro Barbosa are "untouchable."

The Bulls would probably give up Larry Hughes, Tyrus Thomas or Drew Gooden, and a 1st rd. pick. The Heat would have to send Marion and his expiring contract back to Phoenix, along with Daequan Cook or Udonis Haslem and a 1st rounder as well.  This trade makes alot more sense if the Bulls are the target. The Suns get a vet in Hughes, an uber-athletic PF in Thomas, and a 1st rd pick that will likely provide immediate production.

When Amare (not if) gets traded it will be the biggest deal in the NBA in a long time. I think that the Suns are smart not to move him to a West team who they will fight with for a playoff spot next year. I would love to see him in a Pistons or Raptors jersey as they are my teams. The Pistons could move Rasheed Wallace, Amire Johnson, and a pick, Wallaces contract is up at the end of this year so that would give Phoenix the expiring contract they want. He would also help them this year in thier playoff run as he is a better fit with Shaq then Amare is. Toronto could deal Bosh or O'neal and a pick but that is probably a long shot. Stoudemire will most likely end up in Chicago or Miami as they seem to have the best players to offer in return. Miami is a very interesting idea as it would send Marion back to the Suns so Shaq would have been traded for Amare in effect.

No matter what the cost, Memphis should go after Amare Stodamire. Spend the money to put him in the middle with Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo on the wings with Mike Conley pushing the ball. CHRIS WALLACE, PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!!!!!

I havent followed Suns basketball, so my question is.. why are the Suns looking to move Amare? Every time I have watched him play, he has been fantastic. All these senerios from this post seem totally unrealistic, even if the suns get expiring contracts.

Any comments would be fantastic

Thanks

I love Grant Hill.  If it weren't for him, the Pistons never wouldv'e made it through that hideous teal jersey era and without his ankle surgeries, he would have some of the best all around stats ever in my opinion.  However, while still a very viable player, how can he be untuchable?  If a veteran team needs someone like Hill who will package some young player(s) and maybe a pick or two.  They aren't going to win soon and Grant won't be there when you do.  As for Leandro Barbosa, I understand he is the only reliable backup option to Steve Nash and he is extremely quick but to call him untouchable; does someone know that hes going to be a 20-10 guy somehow suddenly?  I can see why although the team is fading you can't trade Nash.  He is the heart and soul of team and the face of the franchise.  Without him, they aren't comptetitive at all.  Come one over to Detroit Amare.  You and Stuckey would be a sick young inside/outside combo.

I'm glad that a deal with Portland didn't go through.  LaMarcus Aldridge is a perfect fit for Portland, and Amare's malaise would only get worse with Portland's slow tempo.

Looks to me like if Portland wants a good point guard instead of trying to trade with the Suns for Amare, they should trade with the Bulls.

Kirk Hinrich, Larry Hughes, and Drew Gooden for Lamarcus Aldridge, Jered Bayliss and Raef Lafrentz.

Don`t that solve both their teams needs.

Hinrich running point with Roy and Oden would be nice and so would Derek Rose with Lamarcus Aldridge.

no Kirk Hinrich and his crappy contract, you can deal with that over the next few years.

Blazers might not need anybody...they looked good tonight. Blake and Webster coming back soon.

What is the Deal with Bergers sources...I mean how many "nba team executives" do you talk to?  Don't make this up by reading other rumors other bloggers like you have made up.  If all you are doing is speculating then say so...

Acccording to NBA rules, Shawn Marion can't be traded back to Phoenix.  A team isn't allowed to re-aquire a player they had previously traded.
