Reggie Miller: Shame on Knicks fans

Other than Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller was the opponent who had the most transcendent, clutch performances against the Knicks in Madison Square Garden. Who could forget the eight points in 8.9 seconds in Game 1 of the 1995 conference semifinals, or the 25 fourth-quarter points in Game 5 of the '94 conference finals?

Nobody wore the black hat in the Garden better than Miller. Nobody -- not even Jordan -- got after it with Spike Lee on the sideline like Miller.

So, yes, Miller was watching Kobe Bryant's 61-point game against the Knicks Monday night. And yes, he was impressed. But he was also appalled that Knicks fans who used to torment him were chanting "MVP!" for Kobe. So appalled that he was texting his old nemesis throughout the game.

"I was texting Spike as the game was going on, saying how disappointed I was in the fans chanting "MVP!" for Kobe," Miller said Tuesday, speaking on a TNT pre-All-Star conference call. "I was like, 'How the mighty have fallen.'" Because I remember in times past, I never got cheered. I'm sure Jordan never got cheered. And now they are chanting "MVP!" for Kobe? And all (Lee) kept doing was texting back and going, 'Look, times have changed. The climate has changed.'

"I wish I would've gotten the red carpet treatment when I went to the Garden," Miller said. "That would've been nice."

Oh, how far the Knicks have fallen. I couldn't even fathom Pistons fans chanting that for anyone, ever. You think Pistons fans ever chanted MVP when Jordan dropped a bomb on us. No, they were screaming and yelling obscenities like any passionate fan. Could you see the Palace of Auburn hills chanting for Lebron? Your team may be in a state of turmoil but to see the fans of one of the most storied franchises is sad. The Clippers, a 20 year perennial laughing stock of the NBA, had devout fans the whole team. Stick by your team. The Lions were 0-16 and I am still proud to say I am a Lions fan. When you aren't supporting your team, you aren't supporting the city. You think the team doesn't want to win. If you don't have the talent, don't blame players who bust their butt every game for being straight up undermanned.

Miller has always been comtemptible, and drew the ire of opposing fans because he craved it. Knicks fans don't have anything else to cheer for, so a week that brings Kobe and LeBron to town is excitement. I watched the Louisville fans high fiving the UConn players last night after that beat down by the Huskies, and I've witnessed Nebraska fans applauding the opposition for good play on the football field. It's called respect. NY Knicks fans respect the game, and the gladiators. Why not cheer for them; booing gets tiresome after a few years.

I watched the game. It wasn't just Knick fans in that building. The Lakers, like the Yankees, have a following wherever they go. There was a mixture of reactions to Kobe's performance. There were the boos that tried to drown out the MVP chants early in the contest, but that just seemed to energize a determined Kobe. By game'e end, all Knick fans could do was witness something no Garden crowd had ever seen. Wrap your head around the fact that Kobe scored more points in one game than any hoops player in the history of Madison Square Garden, and he did it efficiently and seemingly effortlessly. That is what drew the respect of the Garden crowd.
